Crater Lake

Crater Lake is a perfect example of the beauty that can come after almost total destruction.  Crater Lake is the filled caldera of an ancient volcano (Mt. Mazama) that blew its top 7,700 years ago (like Mount St. Helens did) and then collapsed in upon itself creating a huge caldera surrounded by what used to be the sides of the mountain.  The snow and frequent rain that falls in Southern Oregon filled the caldera.  The lake has no source other than the rain and snow, resulting in pure and clean water.  The park road takes you all around the lake with many short hikes to beautiful overlooks as well as great viewpoints you can reach with your car.  The park is closed to car access in the winter and early spring, so check the National Park page below for road conditions.

Crater Lake lodging and camping is a bit sparse.  There are only two lodges inside the park and two campgrounds.  Neither campground is near the lake.
